Some countries are prone to specific natural disasters. In your country-specific health and safety training, you will learn about potential threats in the country and how best to prepare.
Here is some general information on what to do in case of a natural disaster.
Earthquakes
- Stay in doorways and under tables.
- Look away from glass and protect your head, neck, and eyes.
- Do not use elevators.
- If you are outside, find an open area away from buildings and use something to cover your head and neck.
- If you are on public transportation, follow the instructions of the staff.
- Remember that there may be aftershocks after a strong earthquake.
- For more information, please review the MIT EHS fact sheet on earthquakes.
Tsunamis
- Tsunamis can occur in coastal areas after a large earthquake.
- Get to high ground as soon as possible.
- If you do not have time to get away, go to the highest level of a building.
Typhoons
- Monitor news updates when a typhoon is predicted and stay at home if it is safe.
- Make sure you have enough food and water.
- In general, you should follow your work or home community’s lead in making decisions during a natural disaster, but keep in touch with MISTI staff.
