Trying local food is an important part of learning about any culture. However, be careful with what you eat to avoid getting a food-borne illness.

Contaminated food or drinks can cause travelers' diarrhea and other diseases and disrupt your travel. Review the CDC website for destination-specific information on avoiding food poisoning. Some destinations, such as developing countries, carry more risks than others.

Usually safe to consume

  • Foods served hot
  • Dry or packaged foods
  • Bottled or canned drinks
  • Pasteurized milk

Might be risky to consume 

  • Raw foods
  • Street food
  • Tap water: Tap water can be disinfected by boiling, filtering, or chemically treating it
  • Fountain drinks
  • Ice: Do not use ice in developing countries; it was likely made with tap water
  • Freshly squeezed juice (unless you prepare it yourself)
