Learn about Charlie's research!
This summer, Charles Janson (MArch '25) conducted an independent research project, Material Ecologies: A Study of Earth Building in South India.
Read the below interview with Charles to learn more!
How do you get to work? How do you get around in general?
I usually walk or bike to work on the trails. When traveling around South India, I used the Indian train system.
What is your research like day-to-day?
My research focused on exploring local materials and building techniques in the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. I was interested in both vernacular buildings materials and contemporary adaptations responding to changing weathers.
What is an aspect of your work that you're excited about?
I am most excited about learning from local builders and masons whose intuition stems from years of work and centuries of generational knowledge.
Have you visited any new/exciting places?
I visited Fort Kochi in Kerala which had a very diverse cultural history/influence. I really enjoyed traveling to Munnar and hiking around the area. The tea was amazing!
Have you tried any new foods you enjoyed or seen anything new?
My favorite meal is Biriyani. Enjoying some on a train in the photo below!
